Kelanawisata.id, Yogyakarta - The Borobudur Authority is promoting the transformation of tourism destination management through the Borobudur Tourism Area Destination Management Workshop. Strengthening the Destination Management Organization (DMO), Destination Governance (DG), and Destination Leadership (DL) are key areas that require attention. This was conveyed by the Minister’s Expert Staff for Sustainable Development and Conservation, Dr. Frans Teguh, MA., CHE (November 28) at the Gaia Cosmo Hotel in Yogyakarta.
In his presentation, Mr. Frans Teguh emphasized that tourism management today must be oriented toward sustainability and collaboration. “How do we open our hearts, open our minds, and open our intentions to collaborate?” he said.
Destination development is not just about attractions, but also the entire ecosystem, including local communities, cultural strengths, human resource capacity, and the use of digital technology. Within the tourism ecosystem, cross-sectoral collaboration is the key to successful destination management. This workshop also highlighted various on-the-ground issues, ranging from tourist overcrowding or overtourism to tourism-related accidents that demand improvements in destination safety standards.
The Ministry of Tourism is promoting the implementation of sustainability standards, human resource capacity building, the use of big data in visitor management, and the establishment of government–industry–community collaboration forums at the local level. Leadership to coordinate various sectors is needed to unify visions, facilitate action, and build trust among stakeholders.
Through the DMO-DG-DL approach, the government hopes that Indonesian destinations will become increasingly resilient, high-quality, and globally competitive, while preserving the environment and local culture as the cornerstone of sustainable tourism.
