Kelanawisata.id, Wonosobo – On Sunday morning (March 29), Wonosobo’s town square was flooded with a sea of people who witnessed the excitement of the 2026 Mudik Festival’s Grand Finale. The event marked the culmination of this year’s Traditional Hot Air Balloon Festival. It not only showcased the beauty of hot air balloons with their diverse, creative, and unique designs but also reaffirmed Wonosobo’s position as a premier tourism hub in Central Java that is beginning to gain international attention.

Fahmi Hidayat, Head of the Wonosobo Regency Tourism and Culture Office (Disparbud), expressed deep appreciation for the success of this year’s event. He emphasized that the festival’s success was the result of solid collaboration between the government, the community, the private sector, and full support from various related agencies such as the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation through the Surabaya Regional Airport Authority Office 3, the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism, the Borobudur Authority, AirNav Indonesia, AirNav YIA Yogyakarta, PLN, the Central Java Provincial Office of Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, the Wonosobo Police, the Wonosobo Military Command (Kodim 0707), and various other cross-sectoral agencies.'

“This year marks the fifth anniversary of the Mudik Balloon Festival since the pandemic, with truly exponential growth. The Wonosobo Traditional Hot Air Balloon Festival is not merely an attraction, but a cultural heritage that has held Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) from the Indonesian Ministry of Law since 2025. With increasingly mature management, we are optimistic that this event is worthy of advancing to the global level,” said Fahmi.

He also explained that tourist visits to Wonosobo during this year’s Eid al-Fitr season saw a significant increase, driven by the Balloon Festival, which was held 41 times from March 22–29, 2026, across 23 locations. Visitor numbers from March 22 to 28 exceeded 300,000, and during the festival’s peak on that Sunday morning, the number of visitors was estimated to reach 40,000 to 50,000, including approximately 500 international tourists from various countries such as Pakistan, India, Palestine, France, Italy, the Netherlands, the United States, Canada, Belgium, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Japan, South Korea, China, South Africa, and Australia.

Fahmi also provided clarification regarding the absence of international participants at the 2026 Mudik Festival. He explained that participants from Latin America canceled their attendance due to the impact of the U.S.-Iran conflict, which caused flight disruptions, including the closure of Qatar’s airport. Nevertheless, he emphasized that the absence of these international participants did not diminish the festival’s value or its festive atmosphere.

Measurable Economic and Governance Impacts

Fatonah Ismangil, Head of the Marketing Division at the Wonosobo Tourism and Culture Office and Coordinator of the 2026 Mudik Festival, added that the success of this year’s festival was measured not only by the number of visitors—which reached tens of thousands—but also by the comprehensive event management.

At the event’s peak on Sunday morning, 45 of the best balloons were showcased, selected by the Wonosobo Balloon Community. Most were chosen from previous festivals held in various villages from March 22–28, 2026.

“The 2026 Mudik Festival series has been held at 23 locations across 9 sub-districts from March 22 to 29, 2026, featuring a total of approximately 1,200 balloons—most of which are new balloons with an archipelago theme that adorned the skies of Wonosobo. “These best balloons were then displayed at the Town Square during the 2026 Mudik Festival’s Grand Finale today,” she explained.

“Our focus is on ensuring that the entire series of activities is well-managed, ranging from traffic management and environmental cleanliness to economic empowerment through MSME and street vendor bazaars,” Fatonah continued.

Toward a Leading Agribusiness and Tourism Hub

The highlight of the event, held at Wonosobo Square, was attended by members of the Regional Leadership Forum (Forkopimda), the CEO of AirNav Indonesia, and representatives from various relevant agencies, further underscoring the optimism of the Wonosobo Regency Government.

The presence of international tourists at this festival serves as strong evidence that Wonosobo’s tourism appeal has gained global recognition. All parties involved—from security personnel and healthcare workers to volunteers—were also commended for their dedication in ensuring the smooth operation and safety of the festival.

With the successful conclusion of the 2026 Mudik Festival, the Wonosobo Tourism and Culture Office is committed to continuing to innovate. It is hoped that through the strengthening of this iconic tourism and cultural sector, Wonosobo’s vision of becoming a leading agribusiness and tourism hub in Central Java can soon be fully realized.
