Kelanawisata.id, Sleman – Originally built as a sediment-control structure, Grojogan Watu Purbo has transformed into a unique tourist destination. Its exotic, tiered formation sets it apart from other sabo dams, while volcanic rocks carried by cold lava flows during rainfall enhance its natural charm, creating a cascading, multi-level waterfall effect.
Constructed in 1975 under the authority of the river basin management agency, this sabo dam was designed to control lahar flows following eruptions of Gunung Merapi. Located in Merdikorejo Village, Tempel, Sleman, the site now offers scenic views of cascading water framed by lush shrubs and greenery.
Tourism activities at Grojogan Watu Purbo began through community efforts in 2017, when local residents initiated clean-up and development activities. By the end of 2019, the site started attracting visitors, with social media playing a significant role in boosting its popularity. This growing attention encouraged residents to set up small food stalls, creating economic opportunities from the increasing tourist flow.
Grojogan Watu Purbo features six terraced levels, forming a striking visual combination of green vegetation, dark volcanic rocks, and flowing white water. Despite its beauty, visitors are advised to remain cautious, especially during heavy rainfall, as the site is part of the Kali Krasak river system and may be prone to sudden flooding.
A visitor, Danang, a Geography student from UMS, shared his experience "When visiting Grojogan Watu Purbo, I felt a cool and comfortable natural atmosphere. The tiered waterfall, clear river flow, and surrounding greenery and rocks make it an आकर्षive destination. Visitors can not only enjoy the scenery but also play in the water at the lower levels of the waterfall."
Beyond its appeal as a tourist attraction, the site also holds scientific value. It serves as a natural laboratory for geomorphological studies, illustrating fluvial sedimentation processes from volcanic material originating from Mount Merapi.
Danang further explained "From a geographical perspective, Grojogan Watu Purbo represents both aesthetic and scientific value. The rocks found here are volcanic materials transported downstream by the Krasak River. The river flow reflects fluvial processes, while the terraced dam structure is a result of human intervention to regulate water flow. This makes the site a clear example of interaction between natural processes and human activity, suitable for tourism as well as educational purposes."
Located approximately 22 kilometers from Yogyakarta city center, the site can be reached in about 40 minutes via Jalan Magelang. It is accessible by both motorcycles and cars, although the road becomes narrower closer to the destination, requiring extra caution. Motorcycles are often the more convenient option.
For cycling enthusiasts, Grojogan Watu Purbo is also an ideal weekend destination. Situated in the northern part of Yogyakarta, it offers a refreshing route for bikers. Visitors can enjoy “ciblon” (playing in the water) in the cool upstream flow, creating a memorable nature experience. Nearby, small food stalls are available for visitors to rest and enjoy local snacks after exploring the area.
