The cool water beneath shady trees enhances the refreshing atmosphere felt by visitors. Umbul Sigedhang and Kapilaler are two adjacent springs. In the past, the area around Umbul Sigedhang was filled with banana trees, which became the origin of its name. In the 1980s, many statues were discovered around the spring, believed to date back to the Ancient Mataram Kingdom.
Meanwhile, the name Kapilaler originates from the Dutch word Capillair, referring to water channel construction carried out around the 1930s. Over time, local communities adapted the pronunciation into Kapilaler.
Nature, however, never truly hides its beauty. As time passed, residents realized that the water emerging from the earth possessed exceptional quality—not only clear but also rich in minerals. The transformation from a local bathing site into an ecotourism destination began when awareness of water conservation merged with the desire to share its beauty. Today, Umbul Sigedhang has been developed without losing its natural essence, inviting visitors to experience its freshness.
“This has been my experience visiting several times. I always choose Umbul Sigedhang because the water depth is not too high and the place is shady. There are also warm fried snacks available after swimming in the spring. Oh, and there are many fish in the main pool,” said Hakim, a visitor from Yogyakarta.
The water of Umbul Sigedhang is incredibly transparent. Visitors can clearly see grains of sand and stones at the bottom of the pool, which is about one and a half meters deep. Swimming here feels like floating in the air due to its remarkable clarity.

One of the most unique features is the presence of a giant banyan tree whose roots hang down toward the edge of the spring. This creates a magical and serene atmosphere while also serving as natural shade, keeping the area cool even under intense sunlight. Unlike many other springs, Umbul Sigedhang still maintains its natural rocky base. The sensation of stepping on smooth stones underwater provides a relaxing, almost therapeutic effect.
Umbul Sigedhang serves as a reminder that nature always gives its best when it is preserved. It is not only a place for tourism, but also a space to return to simplicity—where water and an ancient banyan tree tell a story of timelessness. The location is approximately 14 kilometers from Klaten city center, with a travel time of around 30 minutes. It is accessible by private vehicle, and the entrance fee is only Rp10,000.
