Kelanawisata.id, Yogyakarta – Fellow Travelers, a trip to Kotagede isn’t complete without a stop at Gang Rukunan. Traditional Joglo houses with distinct Javanese architecture line the street between two gates. Welcome to Between Two Gates, or as the locals affectionately call it, Gang Rukunan.

Hidden in Kampung Alun-alun, not far from the grandeur of the Gedhe Mataram Mosque, this alley offers a unique glimpse into the past and showcases the aesthetic beauty of traditional Joglo houses. Why is it called “Between Two Gates”? The name is more than just a figure of speech. Literally, this area is a residential alley sandwiched between two main gates on the east and west sides.

A row of nine Joglo houses faces south. There are three Joglo structures in Gang Rukunan, meaning one Joglo serves three houses. Additionally, the traditional houses here are closely clustered and share interconnected rear spaces. At the front of each house, a defined path runs through, and there are permanent benches in front of every home.

This philosophy is what gave rise to the name “Gang Rukunan.” Here, you’ll see how the concepts of public and private spaces blend into one. The path running through these houses isn’t merely a passageway; it serves as a “shared living room” for the extended families who live there.

The moment you step through its iconic gate, the bustling street noise vanishes instantly, replaced by a soothing silence. You’ll see a row of traditional Javanese houses (Joglo and Limasan) that have retained their authenticity remarkably well. The intricate wood carvings on the doors, the ventilation openings (trawangan), and the thick brick walls all showcase the grandeur of Mataram architecture in its heyday.

One thing you must remember, Between Two Gates is not an empty museum. This place is an active residential community. This is its main uniqueness: a living, breathing cultural heritage site. You might run into residents sweeping their yards or simply greeting you warmly. This adds a warm, human touch to your visit.
To access Gang Rukunan, travelers simply need to walk south from the Masjid Gedhe Mataram parking lot. Gang Rukunan is located on the east side of the road. It’s situated in Kampung Wisata Purbayan, Kotagede. When entering Gang Rukunan, motorized vehicles must be turned off and pushed by hand. This is the unique feature of Gang Rukunan.
