Kelanawisata.id, Semarang – Travelers, Semarang is home to a building crowned by a massive dome that has stood gracefully for nearly three centuries. Located in the heart of the Old Town, Blenduk Church is not merely a house of worship but a crown that enhances the beauty of “Little Netherlands” in Central Java.

The church’s official name is actually GPIB Immanuel. However, the name “Blenduk Church” derives from its domed roof. Locals are more familiar with calling it “Blenduk Church” because in Javanese, “mblenduk” means to bulge or protrude.

Originally, Blenduk Church was actually built in the style of a Javanese stage house. It was founded in 1742 by Johannes Wilhelmus Swemmelaa; however, H.P.A. De Wilde and W. Westmaas rebuilt Blenduk Church in 1894–1895. Architecturally, the post-renovation style of the Blenduk Church is Pseudo-Baroque (a European architectural style from the 17th to 19th centuries). They were the ones who introduced the Neo-Classical elements we see today, including the addition of a large dome and two imposing bell towers at the front.

The Blenduk Church’s large dome is copper-clad and served as a primary distinguishing feature unmatched by other churches of its era. The interior beneath this dome is exceptionally spacious and offers remarkable acoustic effects. Inside, there stands a massive antique pipe organ from the Dutch colonial era. Although it is no longer played to preserve its authenticity, the organ’s presence lends a magical and classical ambiance to the worship space.

Additionally, there are two twin towers on the right and left sides of the front. The building features a large wall clock that still retains an “Eastern European” ambiance amidst Semarang’s tropical climate. The serene Srigunting Park offers the best vantage point to capture the full grandeur of Blenduk Church. Located right next to the church, the park provides a backdrop of the church while you sit on its classic park benches.

The area around the church has been revitalized with wide sidewalks and vintage-style street lamps. Travelers can explore other heritage buildings such as the Marba Building or Spiegel Bar & Bistro.

Not far from the church, travelers can hunt for unique antique items, ranging from vintage cameras and old coins to home decor trinkets. Travelers can also stop by Klitikan Market to find antique and aesthetically pleasing items. After a tiring day of exploring, travelers can rest while enjoying lunch at an aesthetically pleasing café near the church. An unforgettable experience exploring Semarang’s Old Town.
