Kelanawisata.id, Yogyakarta – Behind the hustle and bustle of Malioboro, there is a simple corner that has witnessed the long history of milk-drinking culture in Yogyakarta. Warung Susu Murni Pak Warto, established in 1977 in Prawirodirjan, Gondomanan, remains faithful in serving a soothing glass of warm milk. “Sri Sultan once visited here, now it's only Gusti Yudho,” Pak Warto reminisces with a smile.
Before having his own stall, Pak Warto had sold milk together with others. “Before 1977, I sold milk with other people. Gradually, in 1977, I started selling on my own,” he said. At that time, a glass of milk was only one hundred rupiah. The motto “Affordable, Festive, Healthy” has been the guide and life philosophy he has followed since he started selling.
The culture of drinking milk has actually been known since the Dutch East Indies era in the 19th century, but it only developed during President Soeharto's era through programs empowering farmers and pure milk stalls in various regions, including Yogyakarta. Warung Susu Murni Pak Warto serves as concrete evidence that a simple tradition can survive, even remain loved across generations.
In addition to hot and cold milk, visitors can also enjoy STMJ (milk, turmeric, ginger, and honey), toast, and egg noodles at this nostalgia-themed stall. So, if you visit Yogyakarta, Kawan Kelana, don't forget to stop by Warung Susu Murni Pak Warto.
