After everything they went through, the residents began to pick themselves up with what little strength they had left and rebuild their lives. Nearly 20 years later, the area that was once the epicenter of the earthquake is now slowly transforming into a scenic tourist destination.

Portobayan River Camp is one of Yogyakarta’s off-the-beaten-path natural tourist spots. This is because it is located at the epicenter of the earthquake in Potrobayan, Srihardono, Pundong. Potrobayan offers a view that looks directly out onto the Opak River. This landscape provides an experience that is not only enjoyable but also serves as a reminder of the earthquake that once shook the area.

Located on the riverbank with a spacious, green area, Potrobayan is a popular spot for young people to set up tents and spend their weekends. There are many activities to enjoy there, ranging from camping and cooking to enjoying meals brought from home or simply hanging out with friends and family.

Not far from the site, a monument was also erected to commemorate the event and pay tribute to the victims affected by it. In terms of design, this monument may not be particularly special. However, it is hoped that its construction will help keep the disaster alive in the community’s memory.

This tourist attraction has a positive impact on the livelihoods of local residents. The surge in visitors has had a positive economic impact on the community. “There’s definitely an economic impact, especially on the community’s creative economy. There are food stalls, and staff working at the tourist site—all of which indirectly generate income. Plus, the income generated in the village—they contribute to the village fund. So, it boosts the community’s creative economy,” said Mr. Heriyadi, the village head of Potrobayan.

Potrobayan has now become a tourist destination that offers natural beauty, with green grass that enhances its natural charm. The sound of rushing water against a backdrop of gently rolling hills creates a cool atmosphere rarely found in urban areas. The location is accessible by both motorcycles and cars. Visitors simply pay for parking. Those wishing to camp can pay the local office to rent a campsite.
