Kelanawisata.id, Yogyakarta – Slamet Nugroho, 66 years old, is the figure behind Kopi Tenan. A business born from his desire to introduce authentic Indonesian coffee. He believes that coffee is not just about taste, but also "emotional art and nature" that reflects his love for the richness of the Indonesian archipelago's flavors. For him, "the real Indonesian coffee, that is Kopi Tenan."

Slamet's journey with coffee began while working at a mining company, when he was first introduced to espresso by a foreign colleague. That experience became a turning point in his perspective on coffee. He realized that public appreciation for coffee would continue to grow, so authentic blends need to be created so that consumers can truly experience Indonesian coffee.

Slamet also emphasized the importance of understanding the quality of the beans and the processing methods. According to him, the bitterness in coffee should be distinguished between that caused by caffeine and that caused by being burnt. He mentioned that everyone has different taste sensory perceptions, and that is where the art of coffee lies: unlimited exploration of flavors, simultaneously with education. “Knowledge is expensive, but it must be cultivated to become cheap,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to sharing knowledge with farmers and the community.

Now, Kopi Tenan offers more than 70 single origins from four varieties—Arabica, Robusta, Excelsa, and Liberica—complete with signature blends such as Exe Yold, Kopi Gosong, Imagena, and Xdure. For Slamet, enjoying coffee should be done “as beautifully as possible, as comfortably as possible, as artistically as possible,” a philosophy that forms the soul of his efforts to nurture and advance Indonesian coffee.
